Up to 50 kilometres with electric drive
Volkswagen is betting on electric mobility. A fleet trial was started for this in June 2008. The prototype Golf twinDRIVE® is to be trialled. Its electric drive offers better performance than the one in earlier prototypes. TwinDRIVE® represents the latest generation of plug-in hybrid technology. In this case, the electric drive is no longer just a boost for the combustion engine. Thanks to the new lithium-ion battery, the car's range has been increased to 50 kilometres (about 30 miles). This means the combustion engine isn't used at all for many of the journeys that are driven day in and day out. On longer drives, the driver enjoys the benefit of efficient Volkswagen combustion engines.

We at Volkswagen are convinced that it will be possible to build electric cars suitable for mass production as early as the middle of the coming decade, providing suitable storage batteries are available.
