In the Golf twinDRIVE®, the electric motor and combustion engine are coordinated precisely to work together in putting power onto the road. The electric drive is the car's principle drive over short distances. During acceleration, it is supported by the combustion engine as required. Once a speed of 50 km/h (about 30 mph) has been reached, the clutch is closed and the energy can flow directly to the wheels without any electric conversion losses. In this mode, the electric motor can provide a boost during powerful acceleration. The lithium-ion battery can be recharged as part of combined driving modes. In particular, the battery is recharged when the car is braking. We at Volkswagen have taken great care to exploit the potential of hybrid technology to the full. This means no energy is lost.
